‘What has this school board done?’ 12:08 PM Friday, October 9, 2009 Journal News I appreciate the letter from Heidi Bruzina ("Candidates want to cut teachers," Oct. 2); however, she has some of her facts wrong. She asked, "Do we inconvenience adults or shortchange the education of children and, in doing so, jeopardize the future of our community?" The answer to this is: Yes, yes, yes. The situation the school system is in is not from something that is going to happen; it is from something that already has happened. For one, the school board we have now refused to allow bids on contracts to help lower costs; they just gave the contract to people who were giving them money. Even when they knew they could save $300,000, they were not interested and would not even check it out. ... This school board is not interested in saving money or helping the children. Most students don’t even have books to bring home to study with. How is this helping our children to get a good education? Also, they make rules, such as that all calamity days will be made up at the end of the year. This is only true until Mark Morris wants to change it to fit his needs. ... Remember, the taxpayers had to pay $75,000 for one day of school, and that day was Memorial Day. The school board had no problem disgracing the memory of our loved ones and the sacrifice our soldiers made. Shame on the school board. ... You may be right — some positions may have to be cut. But that is the fault of the school board for allowing hiring favors. Besides, cutting some positions from the education system is no worse than cutting our police or fire departments. ... Are you saying educators are more important than these people? ... What has this school board done, except to waste taxpayers’ money? And if we don’t vote your way, first you stop busing, which already is paid for, and then you put stress on our children by telling them things about the election that they should not be involved in. Using our children to pad your pocket is disgusting. ... I am voting (for Arnold) Engel, (Tony) Steer and (Erik) Rivera. I have never met but one of these people, but I am tired of people who I believe to be crooks running this system. ... Rick Rouse Hamilton |
